I agree with all the comments about it being a story. Pretty much I see a girl who has issues with partying, and alcohol probably got the best of her and she passed out. This guy who she had a relationship with before was at the same party, and he knew something was wrong. He brought her home, and tried to keep her alive, but she's not responsive. She opens her eyes finally and sees him and doesn't remember a thing. He tries to get her to go back to sleep, but she wants him to stay, as they both have feelings for eachother. He has someone new now, and things are complicated. He then remembers all the lies and bullshit she put him through and leaves because he know this isn't the right thing to do.

I also agree with everyone who thinks this song is metaphorical. "I'm checking your pulse, I'm giving you air. But your body disagrees, no it don't care at all. I'm wasting my time." Their relationship. He does everything for her, to get nothing. That's why they broke up.

"Now your eyes roll awake, you're looking at me. You say 'Darling what happened? Did I fall asleep? And you carry me home, because I know I wasn't here." She finally starts listening to him. She wants to know what happened between them that caused everything to go downhill. She wants to know how they got back to being even on speaking terms.

The rest of the song is him debating whether or not he still wants her or not, as he probably has another girl; "I'd sing you a song, but I'm feeling quite off in my heart. It's occupied. Now's not the time."

"If I am the clock, then you are the time. I'm patiently waiting when you're out of line." He's always stuck with her through everything.

"I'm counting the times you lied to my face. My hands were full, not a second to waste." He wants to be with her but he knows everything ended for a reason. And he leaves.
