This song is a complete joke lyrically. Musically, very good indeed but the substance is severely lacking. The entire song commits the logical fallacy of begging the question, that is, assuming that what you are trying to prove to be true is already true.
In case Darkest Hour wasn't aware, the existence of God is a heavily debated topic and there is certainly no concrete proof on either side. This song assumes that God doesn't exist and goes from there. There is nothing substantial in the song adding to the argument, just some biased claims made by the lyricist.
If the song is viewed from the perspective of people who call themselves Christians but are instead self seeking and only want money and power, I could see how the lyrics could be somewhat more accurate. Christianity is not about these things but when someone like Joel Osteen runs the largest church in America I can certainly see how that image is maintained.
I love this band. They make some fantastic music. However, they should choose the subject material of their songs a little more carefully, this is biting off much more than they can chew.
Its more like a testimony that John doesnt believe God exists. Not him saying "God doesnt exist no matter what anyone says and I'm right you're wrong hahaha" Really its him saying "I dont believe God exists, no matter what you say I'll believe what I want and i don't believe God exists and I never will, but believe what you want."

I can buy that. The only problem I have with that view (his view not yours), is that if you say you believe something and will always refuse to believe anything else, you are closing yourself off from seeking truth.

Any person who is interested in knowing the truth should always be ready to be open to other people's views and opinions, if you shut your mind to them you are being close-minded and you are worth feeling sorry for. Also, the song is about a little more than him simply not believing because he does attempt to throw some mud in the face of the Christian God. If you are going to make untrue claims about someone's belief you should at least be open minded enough to hear their refutations. Closing your mind to them puts you in a very sad place.
I think its a general statement.. He is saying we should bow to anything without knowing 100% that it is more powerful and real.. He's saying that do not believe everything you hear until you see that its true.

I think someone SHOULD throw mud in the face of Christianity. The majority of Christians constantly throw mud at other religions, beliefs and ideas. And also, you're argument about closing one's mind off, while sounding fancy and nice, is ridiculous. If a mind is too open, it can hold nothing. ;)

I could claim that god is a winged monkey in another dimension that shoots lasers from its nose while riding a tricycle backwards. You don't have the means to prove me wrong, so does that make it the truth? And if you were to prove me wrong, you would have to use science (or common sense). You lose either way.

I'm not saying that I think all god believers to be stupid, I just think they should open their minds to the possibility that should there be no god this whole time, how brilliant is the universe we live in?...
I'm not saying that I think all god believers to be stupid, I just think they should open their minds to the possibility that should there be no god this whole time, how brilliant is the universe we live in? It was created on its OWN? I think a mass realization of this by god followers would lead to further appreciation of nature, the universe itself, and humanity as a whole. Far less wars over 'sacred lands' and superstitions and fear in people who could be living more self driven lives.
You can never know something is 100% true. Everything you experience is through the filter of your own narrow-minded existence. All you have is evidence, not proof. The key is using the evidence to draw logical conclusions. Obviously this doesn't mean you should believe "everything you hear" so I agree with you there.

I agree 100% with this statement. One must discover a balance between having an open mind and using discretion to weed out the obvious falsehoods. Being open minded doesn't mean you have no opinions or stances, it means you listen to others with the goal of refining those stances based on learned knowledge.
Also, generalizing Christians will get you no where.
I would amend to your statement. If a mind is too open, it can hold nothing. If a mind is too closed, nothing can come in. Just like almost everything else in life, the key is achieving balance.
Sothsetsu,
Your winged monkey premise is a part of a common argument against the existence of a God and fails on many levels. Those who seek wisdom and truth will learn to believe in a God who is backed by extensive evidence. EVIDENCE is the key here. No god can be completely proven or dis-proven, but some have more evidence for their existence than others. After what I consider a comprehensive analysis of the available evidence as well as through personal experience I have concluded that the Christian God is real and working. This doesn't mean I have closed my mind off completely from other ideas but it means that my "filter" for what ideas come in and out has been refined.
Show me some evidence for your winged monkey and I'll start listening.
On topic, the song title "No God" is silly because it takes one extreme end of the belief scale. Essentially the lyricist has completely closed off his mind from the possible existence of something greater than himself and completely fails at achieving the balance necessary to strive for seeking truth in this world. That is my point.
I suggest you all continue your search for truth and continue to refine your own filter. I have faith that my God will reveal himself to you. God bless.

We're talking about death...
We're talking about death here, the absolute extreme. What have I gathered from this??
When it's time to go, either the demons or the angels will take you.
The nature of mankind is rebellious and arrogant, I understand that, but make a decision who you want to depart this world with, b/c it ain't bullshit.
I have always loved this band 'darkest hour' so much, they're one of my favorite bands ever. I am so pissed they put this typical bullshit in the ear of those that look up too them, they really took the easy way out, like so many other pussy bands. And this is how they show their gratitude? After finding success and traveling the world?? They try to be tough in their atheism, but I bet if you put a gun in their mouth they'd pray like bitches
And forgive my language but I am pissed. They really let me down.
No, actually what you're saying is that they should believe in god out of fear if they are about to die. Departing peacefully doesn't mean they had peace with Christ, it means they had the delusion and ignorance that made them at peace with themselves. The brain is a very powerful thing.

It's very simple. NOBODY knows whether there is 1 "God", 1000000 Gods or none at all. NOBODY! ALL organised religions have incredibly flawed theories, holy books and attitudes that are incredibly self-centered. Read the history of your own religion with a critical eye and you may discover how...

ALL organised religions have incredibly flawed theories, holy books and attitudes that are incredibly self-centered. Read the history of your own religion with a critical eye and you may discover how ridiculously flawed, and often hypocritical it is, for yourself. Most religious people have not read their holy books. They're not aware of their history. They pick and choose what to follow. Premarital sex? Abortion? Homosexuality? They'll pretend they didn't hear it. There is a great correlation with intelligence and belief in a deity.
Religions all believe they are the be all and end all but what about people of other religions? Are they condemned by your Christian God just because they were never exposed to Christianity? What about the lost tribes of the amazon, who never had any outside interaction with other humans or tribes. They were known to create their own religions and gods based on the sun, and other things they saw in their environment. I read about one lost tribe who were visited by an exploring Westerner once. When he returned years later, he realised he had become their God and they built a religion based around this man saving them. Are they not good people who should be 'saved' because they were born into an environment with no Christian influence at all?
And hell, if you are really open-minded why don't you read a book by say, Christopher Hitchens? 'God Is Not Great'. Phenomenal argument from a very well educated man.
Atheism is very simple. It's not necessarily a belief that there is no God. It is a belief that by using all the evidence, all the little factors and all the history, there MOST LIKELY isn't the God that religious people believe in. Or that "God" isn't what we think it is. I am a born again (agnostic) atheist and there are so many conflicting sectors of Christianity who all believe they know the answer. Even when the "answers" conflict with known evidence/science.
Ever wonder why the passages in the Bible reflect the attitudes at the time? It's a man-made book. Religion is blatantly man-made. Ever wonder why the story of Jesus in the bible was an almost EXACT ripoff of the story many Gods and messiahs that came for thousands of years before hand? How can you honestly believe in a book written 70 years after Jesus' death by people who didnt even know him? What about all the translations, all the changes, all the lost passages that were removed from the bible? If something like that was written today, it would be thrown in the trash for being so unsupported. What about the fact that of all the historians living in the area where Jesus lived, at the same time, had ZERO recording or recollection of this man? Christianity, like other religions, has no legs. It fills the void that people have in their lives when they desparately want to understand why we don't know much about the world and why we are here. It's a comfort for the fearful. An argument that is so childish and basic that is apparently cannot be argued. Religion is for people who don't understand morality. People who are in jail. People who need something to follow to become better people. I don't need that. I know how to be a good person. I don't need a false comfort. I'm perfectly happy with who I am and believe I am a good person. I've been on both sides of the fence, and I am MUCH happier that I now have the belief that this will probably be my only life and I should live it on my feet, rather than my knees.
If there is a spirit out there who created the world and who gauges us on how we act, then it's very simple, treat others how you would like to be treated. Forget the arrogant religious brown nosing and just be a good person. Not a good person because you are scared of death or hoping for a magical 2nd life, but be a good person because you ARE a good person!
And just adding to that. There are about 6 major religions, but apparently millions of different religions in total with different belief systems. Most believe their God is the only God and it's the only way to get saved. I'd rather live my life believing in humanity and myself than waste it on a chance that is about as low as winning the lottery.
