My favorite Willy Mason song.

To me this song is about persevering through one's dissatisfaction with society/culture. The use of light reflects the age old symbol of knowledge or enlightenment. WHen he talks about continuing on barefoot strong despite those who have attacked his beliefs or tried to take something valuable away from him, he continues on his quest. While the other troops marched towards the bomb, they asked :hey man whats wrong? and :i said the light turned on:. Here he realizes that war is wrong (the light turned on)

Continuing with the theme of perseverance:

We lost the highway With smoke in our eyes. With these hands and this place, We will spread our own design. Spread our own design

We way no longer know the way, or be on the fast track we thought we had, but we will continue and we will overcome and make what we can of this life with our ideas "with these hands and this place we will spread our own design"
