To me, it almost sounds like someone is crippled in some way (If you could use your hands, what would you use them for) Maybe the person singing got them physically hurt in someway (car accident or something) and he feels guilty for it.
After the person is out of the hospital, he/she is forced to have to use a wheelchair because of the injuries (The fact that they don't care, while they stop and stare, while they put you in that dusty, dirty chair.
That's the vibe I get, I dunno. I'm just trying to think outside the usual "This song is about LOVE!" box. Not that there's anything wrong with that, Love is very important, and is a very special, yet common subject matter that EVERYONE can relate to.
