This song is about a sudden unexpected end to a relationship. From what I can tell it was the "singer" who broke up with "Maurine". He is headed somewhere while contemplating the breakup, what he wishes he had done, what he regrets, what he might have done to have been able to make it work out when he knows in the end that it did have to happen because it would not have worked out in the end. You can posses all the regrets and all the what ifs you want, but it wont change a thing. His hand is shaking because of the anxiety, and "it" is life separated from Maurine. Its as "cloudy", depressing, sad, and "empty" as he believed it would be.
He's not bitter or angry about the breakup, he still cares about her, hence his depression over this issue. He hopes she is ok, or will come to realize it was for the best later on and that she moves on and becomes happy once again. But he can't attend her party, because hes emotionally detached himself from her as much as he can possibly do to keep himself from being eaten up by "guilt", remorse, and sadness.
This song sums up the paradox of having to hurt the ones you love because you love them.
i'm not sure if i feel the same entirely... simply because i'm utterly self-involved, and i like to make every song relate to myself as much as i possibly can, at the time :)

but i really like this interpretation. this is a very real thing- the paradox of having to hurt the ones you love because you love them. well said.

Well said, TheWrongGirl, about interpreting lyrics through the lens of one's own life. I wonder if obscure meaning only CAN be interpreted correctly from the vantage of being immersed in a similar experience. When many words resonate, the recognition of the author's state-of-mind is deep. Otherwise, only vague impressions.

So it's fair to speculate ElBoricanoBlanco had just initiated a breakup with someone.

I get the vague impression from this song that SHE initiated the breakup, and he can't be post-romantically "just friends" (go to her party) because her presence exhumes his hopes, which he would rather keep buried (dead)....

Or, drawing from experience of the opposite, he can't bear to be near her when she's still in love with him (go to her party) because he doesn't feel love for her (he thinks he's dead).
