I think the meaning is pretty obvious.
As a child you have no knowledge of pain or hurt so you live life in complete happiness.
Playing in the street, is fate for the most of us. Children play in the street, it's fate. If something truly horrible was going to happen there is nothing you can do about it. (metaphorically speaking).

Implying that if he could go back, and realize that he was doing all these things that were carefree, he would keep going because fear means nothing to him.
