i don't know why but i've never interpreted "go steady with me" in the way most everyone else seems to have, as in that way teenager's refer to "going steady," or being in relationships.
i always saw it as sara, or whoever the character may be, sort of just asking the other person to maybe give them a little break, be gentle, take it easy on them, so to speak.
i realize that the word structure fits better, and the predominant view does make more sense, but i still hear it the way i hear it, and it seems to have more levels of meaning for me this way.
