I haven’t any doubt this song is about cigarettes.
The first verses are of the burial of his father;
his death must have been what opened his eyes to the dangers of smoking...
makind it a perfect opening.
the part i'm in the dark about is the woman mentioned
"The face of a saint
The voice of a symphony
She says
'The future will be devoid of weaknesses'
Free cigarettes
For all the kids
To make small skeletons"
at first i thought it was a love interest that was his motivation to stop smoking, but now i'm thinking the woman is smoking itself, the voice of a symphony, maybe refering to the calming, or soothing effects of smoking. i know it seems like a stretch but thats what i thought of.
my favorite part in this song would have to be the second verse that starts with "as they laid"
it picks up heavy guitar, and just sounds epic. it's what really drove in his desperation
also; I love crime in stereo one of the top, right under Have Heart
