I think this song is based on the poem "The Hollow Men" by T.S. Eliot which describes how the survivors of war are 'hollow' and lifeless and wandering the earth looking for peace.
When you look at it in that context it actually does fit the album.
Another interesting fact is that Eliot was actually a big fan of another piece of work which was a big inspiration for Schaeffer and that is the poem Inferno by Dante.
Just goes to show you should never judge the intelligence of an artist by the lack of intelligence of most of their fans. Amidst all of the headbanging and snarling the guys in iced earth are actually quite deep thinkers it would seem.
