I would like to offer some corrections to the lyrics: 1."The Strand" has capital letters as it is a street name in London

  1. "Fourth nights" should be fortnight's(two weeks) 3.Portmanteau is a French word for a carrying case and is not spelt "portmento".
  2. "Till Jones said "I must decline", not "to Joan..." 5.You boys have been advised by me, not "are being" 6.Among, not "amoung" 7.Sat in five and twenty little cells, not "Satted by their ....." 8.Burglar Ben not "Buggler Ben" (or even Bugger Ben!) 9 Grey not "Gray", it's an English song! May mean grey suited? Personally I think "great" crowds would sound more appropriate. 10.Shackleton returned from the (South)Pole not the poll. He was an antarctic explorer not a politician! 11.Gallant has two "l"s, it's an English song! 12.Mansion House should have capital letters. It's where the Lord Mayor of London lives. 13.Question mark needed after "Rhine" at end of first verse.

Hope this is helpful

My Interpretation

Also further corrections:

start="14">

  • A "Tar"(Sailor, one of the crew) in grumbling mood, not a "towering" grumbling mood
  • Jaggs the warden not "Jacks"(minor quibble!)
  • The sheet music of this Harry Castling song published by Francis, Day and Hunter(London) for the singer Charles Whittle does have "Great" crowds rather than "grey" crowds I am relieved to know.
