I think the lyrics are about punks and goths from the 80's and such... They were going to rebel against the mainstream, they were wild and crazy, so on. But then they "grew up", so to speak, got married, had families, started paying morgages... and it made them tame. They started becoming less and less of who they were, and more and more like a cookie-cutter mold of what society expected them to be.
