He's leaving town to go somewhere else for a while, but comforts her saying that he'll be hers forever. He sees her sweater on her bed, realizing how perfect she is for him. But all he can think about is going out to explore the world without her, seeing what it's like to be with other girls. He has to do it, it's the only way he'll satisfy his urge and ever be content. And if she stays with him through it all, he'll end up with her because he knows that she's the best thing he'll ever have. He rationalizes all this to her and himself by saying that he'll always be the same guys she's always loved, only he'll feel a sense of completion because of his experiences. This protective rationalization is his only way of holding on to the closest thing he'll ever have to true love.

I could not put this song meaning into better words. In fact, this is exactly what I'm going through and what I just described to my boyfriend in an email. I couldn't believe that your response didn't come out of my mouth and double checked to make sure your profile wasn't mine!

However, I don't necessarily believe he needs to see what it's like to be with other girls, adventuring the world is what his heart desires.
