What I love about TBS is that they really leave a lot of the lyrics open to personal interpretation. This song, to me, is about someone whose trying to tell someone else that they love them, but they just don't know how. They want the other person to figure it out and have them say it first or realize that the person doesn't know how to say it. "If you see something then just say something." He feels like he's let a lot of time waste away and he regrets it "Sad and in love, hands trembled of life that we would have stolen. Anyway, stolen. Well, anyway." And he thinks that he's not the best man out there, that there are other's better than him "Well you are worth more than the man I am." and "Of better men, of better men than me." But when he finally gets that reaction from the other person, he wants it to be honest, not a staged response. He wants it "genuine and unprepared." He feels like he's trapped in what's familiar and home "to brooklen I'm homebound, a trap to the easy." and that he can't get out of that trap. It symbolizes his fear of breaking out of the safe state he's in with the friend and telling them his feelings.

The second verse is about how well he knows the other. The "something awful itches in these walls" refers to his feelings and how they're trapped and wanting to get out. "Found a subtle genious in that white, hot, hatred of yours." this line is quite open. it could refer to when they first met and got to know each other and how he looked passed the outside and saw the true person. "Misuse is practiced, perfected, and played." Maybe he's done wrong trying to get the other to see his feelnigs or he's fucked up in one way or another. "In time I'm gonna get what's mine." He's confident either the person will return his feelings or he'll be able to live with the outcome that comes from it.

of course there's many ways to interpret the song, this is just mine :] i think the whole 9/11 theory is quite interesting and could be a possibility.

I really liked your interpretation of this. Taking Back Sunday is my favorite band so I was about to say that I love how they leave lyrics open for each person to interpret them different.

I look at the song the same way as you do in most ways, excpet I think that maybe he dated a girl or loves this girl and she's with someone else who he knows is a better person than him, but he knows that if it were him with the girl that they would've "stolen life"

I liked your view on the...

I'm pretty sure it refers to a girlfriend or himself cheating in a relationship.

If you ever have a long distance relationship (or even go to different schools) telling people that you know that live near your partner If you see something tell me is common. That's where I think "If you see something, say something" came from. As to Brooklyn, I think he had to move to Brooklyn and that made it a long distance relationship.
