I agree with pillpopper. This song greatly relates to me right now and I really love it. Sidewalks are a symbol of childhood, mostly that young teenager age where you had to walk everywhere instead of being able to drive. I remember walking all through my neighborhood with my close friends just to have something to do. It shows a solid point in someone's life, a constant that's always there to guide. I think the song is about when you grow apart from the people you've grown up with, the people who've been in your same grade school since the 1st grade and those who've lived in your neighborhood with you.
The part of the front porch shows those times when you were a kid with nothing to do and your just sitting there, watching the passers by and just daydreaming. It lets into the image of innocence in a way and it all eventually dies with time. And it also shows how kids are in such a hurry. When I was a young teen I constantly wanted to be able to drive so I wouldn't have to rely on my parents so much, and now I almost miss that childhood ignorance, that hope and wanting feeling.
It can also be about a falling out between too close childhood friends. Me and my best friend are slowly growing apart since he moved away and I'm going to college soon. I'll be leaving behind the sidewalks that used to mean so much and that I really do miss. We used to sit on my front porch all the time too and just talk and laugh. It's definatly a comming of age song. It's a beatuiful song and the aol acoustic unplugged version is just so amazing, look it up on youtube if you havn't heard it yet.
