First, just to clarify: I am a fan of the whole twilight/new moon business, but this won't bias my opinion..
second:
this song shouldn't be based on New Moon. It is associated by being in a scene in the movie and on the soundtrack. relatable to New Moon, just not based from New Moon.
I may be COMPLETELY wrong.. I am in a funny mood as i discuss this:
I think this song is almost self-explanatory. Its about a girl who is in love (or strongly likes) a boy who maybe doesn't know her or notice her in the same way.
she waits for him to notice, while changing herself in ways she thinks might make him like her more. This results in her becoming obsessed and depressed. Over this she loses her friends respect for being something she's not..
The narrator is all the while trying to catch the girls attention "I'll never break your heart; lets do old and grey" etc.
the chorus is essentially telling the girl to open up her eyes and heart; not to focus on one guy who doesn't feel the same towards her; to look to the guys who will treat her right and love her back..
as i said this all maybe completely irrelevant, but its kinda where i see it going.. feel free to prove me wrong :) i want to know what you guys think. Great song, have always been a fan of the Killers
First of all, I'm not a fan of the Twilight and New Moon stuff at all, but I learned of this song. It does have a pretty good soundtrack I may say.

Also you can't really be wrong with what a song means because it has different meanings with each listener.

To me personally this song is about a boy who fell in love with one of his friends. She was interested in him too, but after a short while, she realized she likes him only as a close friend.

The White demon is her, who left him for someone...
The White demon is her, who left him for someone else. "White Demon, who let your friends go."
The whole song is him trying to show her that he is the perfect man for her, and to "let us be in love." and "Widen your heart's scope." beyond what you only see in the men before him.
I have always found it interesting of what others say a song means to them.

Good call, man. That makes so much more sense, whether its "right" or not.
