Sweetest Goodbye Lyrics

I agree with cockandbull. I used to think this song was about breakup sex, but having gone through some things lately, I have a different interpretation of this song.

I have two initial interpretations: It's either that 1) the singer likes a girl but she's with someone else, or 2) they like each other but she's in a relationship. I would initially think it's #1, but my hunch is that it's #2 because "outstretched arms, open heartS" meaning that they both like each other. However, she's in a relationship and they can't do anything about that. She's "as far as an eternity" from him due to this since he can't have her. But they still like and care about each other, keeping the other person close and playing these games. The singer realizes "if it never ends, then when do we start?" Because nothing will ever start between the two of them unless those games end.

The singer knows this and, against what he wants to do, has to say goodbye to her. It's just not right to play these games because it's hurting himself by dragging him along when he knows he can't have her now. Ordinarily he would never leave her behind or ditch her because he loves her, but he has to say goodbye to her. And he knows that she understands that him leaving isn't because he doesn't care. It's because he has to.

The "pushing forward and arching back" part is that war within himself. He knows what he has to do so he pushes himself to say goodbye to them. But then he arches back against that push because he truly doesn't want to. He knows he has to stop their friendship and the games, but this sadly means not having her around. He's battling with himself to say goodbye.

The "how does it feel to know you'll never have to be alone when you get home" part is because it's so easy for her right now. She's the one in the relationship, she's not alone. Meanwhile, he has to "dream away every day, try so hard to disregard the rhythm of the rain that drops and coincides with the beating of my heart." He's the one who has to deal with the pain of their goodbye, while she has someone to go home to. The singer shows his bitterness towards her relationship in this part.

And in the end, he wishes there was someplace that the two of them "could go to" so he could be truthful to his feelings and show her how he feels. By saying goodbye, he's ignoring his feelings. But he wishes there was some way he could just let those feelings come back and show her how much he cares. But he can't because she's with someone else. He wishes there was a place they could go where they could be happy together.
