To me, Alex sounds agonised in this song, matching perfectly to the lyrics.

The person has gone through hell and is finally ready to finish, until his spirits are lifted up from his dying past "to shine from within". But again, he sabotages himself to the breaking point again until the one he learns to love comes to rescue him from his demise. It sounds a little like self-harm in my opinion, as though he has to punish himself for what he feels he has failed at. Although he loves this person, he seems to have a difficult time in showing them and may be confused how to demonstrate affection or appreciation for another being. Regardless, he is certain they are meant for eachother and nothing can come between them. "Nothing can save me from myself. You keep me safe resurrecting my love. An angel like you can never fall, heaven I found right in my arms". These lyrics show that he is able to see beauty in life, in the form of this person, and although he is sure he cant be saved from his own self, she can keep him safe for now.
