Obviously a song about New York, and probably the "universal culture" that is culminating as cities become more and more generic with no distinguishable identity. Gentrification, white flight, urban sprawl, urban decay, yuppies, pushing out middle and lower class people who have lived there for generations (even addressing the original victims: the Indians), suburban development, decentralizing cities rendering them un-walkable, watering down the culture, erasing the past, tearing down historic buildings to built condos, etc etc etc etc.

I'm from Philly, but I do understand the problems facing New York and so many other cities. My mother and all her family are native New Yorkers and tell me how it's completely changed. Quite sad. I know there are more layers here, but this is easy to start with. :)

well put... I live in New York for most of my life and I've seen it change too.. It used to be waaaay more united, and people would talk to eachother much more..

anyway, there's also the "love" undertone to this song as well, I think.. Maybe not... I guess it really depends on how you interpret the "Ego" lines.
