It's kind of funny, I've liked this song for a very long time; I never really was able to fully comprehend the meaning. It wasn't until I was listening to it carefully that I realized that this summed up a situation that I was recently in quite perfectly...
That interpretation by Brighterkeeper, was well put; however, I believe that this is about friends with benefits that wasn't supposed to go anywhere.
"Led by distraction, the empty attraction keeps us blind. Never intending for the complete. Like shadows and alleyways, the unknown continues biding time."
These lines lead you to believe that all they had is the physical side of a relationship, and that is their distraction. That is what makes it okay even though they aren't necessarily attracted to each other anymore, therefore, the empty attraction. "Never intending for the complete" suggests that they weren't really looking for a relationship in the first place.
"Chasing heaven as it fades into black. Can't get it back, no we can't get it back."
This leads one to believe that the character in the song is searching for the happiness that was once felt during the very beginning. It's true that you never really know what you have until it's gone. And now that this is slipping through his fingers he realizes that he has fallen for her, and it's too late to start over.
"I've never, ever loved you so hard. But is that reality, we can't face the battle in the dark."
This is the line in which you learn that he has fallen for her. Once that has happened it just grows more and more. "We can't face the battle in the dark," suggests that the friends with benefits situation is over, and that she is unwilling to give him a shot at love.
"We sit, we think and we figure. Out just right where to start. As these waters rush together. But we keep ripping them apart."
This is the one part that I have not come to fully understand. To me this is showing that they are unsure about where things are going, and they don't know what to do about it. I imagine this as the point where he tells her of his love, and there are so many emotions involved. No matter how hard he tries she keeps ripping him apart.
"Is this truth? Is this real? Is there something more to feel? Do we chase the sensation on blind appeal? Have we now reached the end just to find the beginning again?"
This is my favorite part of the song, and yet some of the most confusing. He believes that what he is feeling is love, but he is unsure. You don't always understand how much or if you loved someone until that love is no more. "Do we chase the sensation on blind appeal" easily means he is scared to take a chance and risk everything to dive into the unknown to find a deeper love. "Have we now reached the end just to find the beginning again" leads you to believe that the relationship is over, and when the end comes, you always think of the beginning. You think of the blind love that once made you grow so close, and now that it isn't there, you long for it.
"Could you stay with me tonight? (We sleep for dreaming and away it goes). And I'll make you believe one last time. (And let you feel it as my heart explodes)."
This is his last plea for her to stay, he is trying to make her believe. He wants to show her how much he loves her, and he'll do whatever it takes...
