Could anyone help me out with the meaning of the very last sentence of the song?

is it:

a) he lost his girl, he's going back home and she's still walking the streets, because she likes the city so very much.

or b) he lost his girl, he's going back home and she now works as a prostitute in the big city.

My Interpretation

It could be either one. The ambiguity is what makes it a beautiful song. Falling in love with the city suggests prostitute to me, but at the same time, it could mean the other.

I agree that it's ambiguous and most likely that's with intention. The singer has no idea what she's doing anymore because he's gone.
