I don't think this song has to be limited specifically to a woman in love; it sounds like it fits just as well to the close relationship of two friends or siblings. It sounds like one of them cares so much about the other that they don't want to realize the darkness inside them, but they are aware of it deep down and are afraid that they're right.
In any case, it's a great song. I love the despairing aspect of it. ;3
