I always like to look at ABR's songs with a different angle. Because JB writes the songs with a Christian base, I feel this song is no different. The person being described in this song is being tormented by Satan because of the mistakes he/she has made in the past. I think it's easy to imagine this song describing an elderly person which is understandable but ABR uses imagery alot and it's apparent in "Crusades". Focus on these lines:
"As the days go by
It's getting harder to hold my head up high
I used to think I'd last forever
Now I'm praying for the light to just carry me away"
When I read these lines I can't help but think of Paul when He wrote to the church of Philippi. Paul was enduring extreme persecution for his efforts of spreading the Gospel. When he was in jail, he was torn between two desires. He wanted to free from his persecution and be with the Lord Almighty in heaven but he also wanted to remain on earth as encouragement for all the believers. To add to that story, Paul completely put his entire faith in Christ and was submissive to His will for his life.
Is this song a reference to Paul's life or is it a story of someone in a similar situation? Just food for thought.
