I think this song is about Bert's career as a singer, and how in his early days he ruined his voice. I think that the song is designed to not mention it blatantly, but hide it within the song. Watered down, meaning less powerful. "Nothing that I can hold on to with my broken hands" hands referring to his singing and "holding on" as in he's going to do it anyway, because it's his life. I think "don't care what you say, cuz it makes no difference if I throw it away" is a smack in the face to the people who say he can't sing anymore (which he can). Kind of like he's giving them a big fuck you, and he's going to do what he wants to. To me, "makes no difference if I throw it away" is kind of like sarcasm, like if you were in a fight and someone tells you they're going to kick your ass, and then your all like "I don't give a shit, do it."
