The first two stanzas are talking about a time in high school when the narrator was driving and tried to beat a train (stuck at a crossing), he thought he was going to get hit (dug in for a duel), but he buried the brakes and survived. But at that moment, his life was split in two: what MIGHT'VE happened if he did get hit by the train vs. what IS happening.
Same thing in the 3rd and 4th stanzas. Just a close call on an airplane. A missed landing, which was mundane to the pilot, but scared the crap out of the narrator.
The other shoe that waits for you? Well, the saying is, "I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop" which means, I just escaped this situation, but I'm waiting for something bad to happen.
I believe that maybe Sonny was shot by gang crossfire. She was just hanging out at the mini-mart, but doesn't know of "Eminem's suburban gangster flow." Later her clothes were cut off, which is what happens during an emergency room visit or an autopsy.
Basically, this song is about fate, as OddHat said. It all seems random until you NEED fate to comfort you after some tragic or scary situation.
