I take the lyrics of the song as her and this guy gave the relationship a try and for some reason it didn't work out. They're trying to be friends, but it's not working because she's thinking of how the relationship could have been. She thinks that it's all or nothing with the lyrics "We were worlds apart and you see, it was so much easier to be". She can't stand being around him without thinking about what they can't have. But she still can't give him up in the lines "But don't you dare go avoiding me. It kills me and yet it keeps me going."
