White Lyrics

Lights is a Christian and from that stand point its easy to see what she's actually writing about here.

This song is about not letting sins from your past keep you from moving forward.

The pre chorus for example:

"Do you see lights turn your shadows white Do you feel bright, turn your shadows white"

Like I said before light is a metaphor for God, and through His forgiveness enabled by Christ's death, we our turned to white (a metaphor for purity) and striped of our shadows (aka sin)

And also:

"Don't let rain clouds cry at all of your parades Let the other side of darkness kiss your face Into the sea, into the sea."

The first line here has obvious meaning. In context to sin it would mean not to let sins from the past ruin the love and life you should be living. This leads right into the next line.

What is the other side of darkness? In the Bible light and dark is a contrasted all the time as a metaphor for good and evil, God and satan. So what's the other side of darkness, it's God. Allowing Him to kiss your face is away of letting Him in and excepting His forgiveness, as a lot of people feel they have to "get over" their sins before they can come to God, but instead to "get over" them they have to go to Him.

"Into the seas, into the sea" is my favorite part of this song. It has this really nice nostalgic feel for me. In the Bible it says that God tosses our sins into the sea to be forgotten forever. Moreover, it says to the very bottom of the sea. This is supposed to help us understand that once our sins are forgiven they are gone for good, and if we don't let them go that is sin itself because God said they are gone for good, and not letting them go is an act of defying God.

I hit submit before I could edit my post, but its all good. Though when I said, "pre chorus" it should have said just "chorus".

I really like the line, "Is mathematics keeping you from thinking free" because I don't like math. As mathematics being used here as an example for something that is exact which in return is very binding, I won't go into the meaning behind this line, but I think other Christians can relate to it a lot.

Great song, I think my favorite Lights song EVER!
