It seems as though the song is about some stoner/slacker friends that hold him back.

:: The stoner is lazy.
"There's lots of gray shades
But that don't make black the same as white"
:: The stoner has tried to defend his addiction/lifestyle, probably by saying it's not that bad, he has it under control, others are much worse, etc. However, none of it justifies basing his entire life around weed.

:: I think you can make that connection -- the stoner feels good when toking.
