The interpretation of 'not in cycles, but in lines' keeps bugging me, that's what i think now:
Life, the river, flows down, and once it reached it's end, it stays there. Many people think of life as a circle, as maybe being reborn. This song might contain a contradiction to this attitude, by saying, it's not a cycle, it's a line, that begins, and ends.
This interpretation is (imo) confirmed by 'from existence into oblivion' as well as 'contending with time' (since time will end for you).
I hope that makes any sense.
PS: Also, great literary metaphor of total rock bottom:
And down we go again...
into the ocean of sorrow
towards the sea of despair
