I agree with sandra, but on the other hand my first impression was a little different and i kinda like to think of this first impression as the real interpretation cause there's a little bit more meaning behind it (at least to me). My first impression was that he (whoever the singer/narrator/artist is) is tired of life as he knows it and wants more outta life so he's joining the military, or possibly some other organized government funded agency, to better himself and serve others. With lyrics like "I know there's a world out there waiting" that may be serving others and "Lord i know it's a chance i'm taking"..
this interpretation makes lines like "i know i can make it and only want it more" a little easier to understand along with "i know u'll forgive the mistakes i make", cause with this interpretation he's better himself.. however, there's no direct indication that it's military he's pursuing and leaves it quite open for altercation and controversy..i do not know enough about the band's history to know that..
