Devout Lyrics

This is my favorite song on the album next to On Foreigner.

Literally it's about being a get-away driver in a robbery. Things go wrong on the inside. Alarms, explosions, casualties, violence. Instead of going inside to help his partner the driver flees and then eventually sells his accomplice out in order to protect himself.

Metaphorically this song is a reflection on a relationship gone bad. It's easy to point fingers once the relationship has fallen apart, but it takes two to make it work, just like the robbery scenario. I think this song is admitting that the other person put in just as much time and devotion to the relationship. The line, "Sold you out" is a way of saying that when things were at their worst, I was only looking out for myself.

I'm pretty sure you hit this one on the head!

I 2nd that! I just love how when he says you were so devout!
