it might just be me inside of my own opinions, but in my mind this song solely follows the book Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater. of course, it was never intended. i just made a new mix cd today, with this song on it. i just found this song yesterday and put it on my cd without really even listening to the lyrics. then i was just in my room reading Shiver, and this song was playing. as i was reading, i noticed how this song covers the book in the most similar way.
from Grace's point of view, this song is sung.
"why did you change? why did you bend and break?"
when Grace witnesses Sam turn into a werewolf, knowing that he will never be human again, and feeling complete agony.
"feels like i've been here before."
when Sam takes Grace to the golden woods, where she once imagined herself being.
"now there's an empty hole where you were long ago, but things are different when you're young."
when Grace feels drained completely because Sam will never be human again. they'll never share another touch, a single kiss, ever again. she remembers when Sam was a wolf and would watch her on her tire swing six years ago to the present after other werewolves attacked her and he saved her. but she realizes that him being there as a wolf isn't enough now. she needs him in his human form, now that she's spend so long with him human.
"the nights are getting cold."
the cold is what turns Sam into a wolf, and Grace and him both know that it was his last year being a werewolf. he would stop being human completely and just be a wolf when winter comes near. when he changes, Sam (in wolf form, watching her like he used to) finds her sitting on her tire swing in the freezing cold. she was bitten by a werewolf six years before (when Sam saved her) and should indeed be a werewolf as well, but she never changed. and they don't know why. he realized that she was sitting in the cold trying to change into a werewolf so that she could be with him.
"there is nothing you can do."
the is no stopping it. Sam would be a wolf forever, and their love would never be progressed any further. there's nothing he can possibly do to cure it.
"you've got the scars to prove it."
when Sam's parents saw him morph into a wolf eleven years ago when he was bitten, they thought that he was possessed and tried to kill him by cutting his wrists. he has the scars, and they haunt him forever.
maybe i'm just looking further into the song than i should, but it truly describes the book to me.
i'm almost done reading Shiver, and i cannot tell you how many tears i have already shed.
this song makes the book more deep when i listen to it.
amazing song and amazing book.
