From my eyes, the persona is mocking someone because even though he advised him not to take this particular path (as someone who had taken the same path in life), this certain someone insist on taking it. In the end, the certain someone ended the way the persona expected him to.

First verse focuses on how the persona questions himself as to how he got into such a horrible situation. This is a way of telling that someone that if you take that path in life, you will, at some point, end up questioning yourself just like the persona did. Therefore the persona is advising the person BEFORE he is to make a decision so that he may have a brighter future.

"Please monsieur remember, don't tell me how to get somewhere better" is basically a sarcastic statement. When the person he is advising retorts and says that this particular path in life will make his future brighter, the persona disagrees, as HE himself had been in that situation, so HE would know better.

The whole chorus seems to be a monologue from my point of view. The persona is telling himself not to bother advising people because they will take the path to doom anyway, for whatever reason. However, he knows that the position he was in before he made the choice was MUCH better than what became of him now. Nonetheless, since people wouldn't listen anyway, he shouldn't be wasting his effort and breath.

I particularly like the phrase "Did you think you could make it on your own?", because what he is trying to say really shines through this phrase, which is that if you don't listen to your superior's advice, you would regret it.

2nd verse deals with how the persona being advised would get himself hurt because of his curious nature to travel in that particular path. Even before he took the path, the persona felt that he had no real conviction in following that path, instead just doing it for the heck of it. Therefore the persona gives up on advising him. "So give it up!" is strong because the persona argues that in following that path, he is giving up his life, or wasting his life.

The bridge has 2 possible meanings. The first one is where the persona believes that whatever advise he gives will not be conveyed by the opposite party, therefore it means nothing. Another interpretation would be that, when the person being advised on goes back to his advisor and tells him about his horrible situation, the persona feels that it doesn't anything to him anymore as he had ALREADY advised him against taking that particular path before this, therefore he would not be surpised nor would he take sympathy on that particular person.

This sarcasm-filled song just makes me great, just like a lot of other sarcastic rock songs :D. Take Mysery loves its company for example.
