This song is about someone who has been living in the past. Reliving something that’s happened in their life over and over again. They just can’t seem to let it go and move on. So in this song it tells them to be brave and just accept things as they are, even though it will be hard. They believe in that person to have the strength to pull through and see the light in the darkness. The person is obviously scared of leaving their little comfort zone of hiding away from whatever the problem is. They’re saying “Just try your best to forget it, it can only make you stronger or you’re going to end up wasting your life reliving something that can’t be changed. Believe in yourself that you can do it, believe that it can only get better from here on”. Then they’re saying “Okay, You need to stop avoiding it, you just need to get on with life, accept and forget what happened”.
You can assume the song is about someone who is dealing with depression but is not fighting against it. However, I look deep into the lyrics and I think this...
From my view, I see this song as a message from a loved one who has died, to someone they have left behind who are struggling to come to terms with it. They can see that they’re holding them back from life so they’re encouraging them to continue their lives because they still have so much to live for and that they shouldn’t dwell on the unfortunate things in life but should look forward with hope. I get this impression particularly from the lines ‘You can stop waiting to breathe / Don’t wait up for me’ saying “Don’t worry about me, you’re still alive so make the most of it” and also the line ‘Don’t wanna wake up to the telephone ring’, the idea of that ‘phone call’ that changes your life when you hear the news. Sad, yet a beautiful and inspirational song =]
