It just boggles the mind that there is a band out there on a major label, making popular music that dares to have this level of artistic vision and sheer ambition. Even though a band writing a symphony is pretentious in the extreme, this is phenomenal stuff, you have to take your hat off to it.

My Opinion

Most definitely, well said!

How is it pretentious? These men are amazing musicians, and symphonies are written BY musicians. This is not pretentious at all. Was it pretentious for Mozart or Beethoven? Just because Muse generally does not write symphonies does not mean that they are not allowed to. And, ALL of their music has always been artistic, visionary, and ambitious. BTW, "pretentious" is defined by Merriam Webster as: : characterized by pretension [which is "an allegation of doubtful value"]: as A : making usually unjustified or excessive claims (as of value or standing) B : expressive of affected, unwarranted, or exaggerated importance, worth,...

if you don't think a rock band writing a symphony isn't ostentatious, what adjective would you use?

you seem to have myopicly latched onto the negative connotations of the word I used, when it was clearly intended as praise.

Go find someone else to flame :)
