well, I have to say that this is a great song...
J. Tillma is just so talented, solo and in Fleet Foxes
as for interpretation, I think that this song is pretty self-explanatory.
he recalls a cold night were he and his significant other had been drinking, hence the "can't see straight" line. as they drove away they got into a car accident causing the "steel on steel" sound. He had no time to react since everything moved so fast. He survives the wreck, but she doesn't, causing him to blae himself every time he thinks about it. He see's how fragile life is and wonders "does nothing last?" He probably has nightmares about the incident, causing him to relive the event every night. He probably see's life as meaningless without her since he thinks it is a curse to have survived and lived.
This song seems so uplifting due to the beat, yet it's such a downer when you read the lyrics
I think you got it right, I also have been reading the lyrics a lot and it seems like it's all just guilt he feels inside, causing the incident and beeing the one that survived.
