I might just be thinking this because of my own life/experience, but when I was listening to the lyrics it just clicked for me. I have a really tough depressing time in the winter (S.A.D; doctor diagnosed, Wikipedia it.)
and to me it seems to be about the main character of the song, Ben I guess, trying to comfort a person in some way who struggles the cold, dark, grey, long yet short days of Winter. He wants to let that person not have to encounter Winter as the person being sung about has a hard time during that time of year.
