I don't think you're too far off. However, I don't get the impression that it's talking about the media. I was thinking it probably had more to do with abuse of organized religion.
Also, the end doesn't give me the impression that he's losing the light... more like it's the album coming full circle. "How will I ever see the light, through the trees?"
The line is one of the last references to the forest on the album. It's strewn throughout, and a lot of the time, it speaks of burning it. "If we die, burn down the forest."
To me, it sort of implies that he'd like to burn it down himself. I see the forest as a sort of "veil" blocking people from seeing the light, which can be interpreted as the truth, as the true God, or something else enitrely. The forest can also be easily equated with the jar from In A Jar. I think the line "if we die, burn down the forest," is kind of a way of saying that if we, as humankind, fail; burn down the forest. Remove the veil, let the truth be known. Which, I guess, is a sort of reference to the apocalypse; it's kind of why the whole Revelation thing is supposed to go down.
