Cover art for Never Again lyrics by All Shall Perish

Given the nature of what ASP is about I think this song is more likely meant to be speaking against America as an oppressor although it is written in a way that can be easily interpreted as being about a relationship gone awry. Makes more sense to me this way especially seeing as the CD art has the statue of liberty standing behind a bullet plagued earth holding pistols and this is one of the CD's main songs.

Here's a bit of my interpretation: "you hear those cries of anguish each time that you face the mirror"

  • Saying that America (government) hears cries of anguish from people they are oppressing/killing.

"and those deafening voices blames me but that's more than I'm trying to hear"

  • People around the world are pointing to America as a bully/world police (maybe an understatement) but our government doesn't listen (George Bush is a great example).

"Never...again. lets just oppress this demon within the abyss is a friend"

  • Americas government used to listen to its people (freedom of speech), instead now it oppresses them (silences their voice). To the american government, the outspoken (anti-government control) citizens are like a "demon within" itself. By silencing them they create an abyss that they don't have to deal with.

"you breathe deceit and I'm surprised i still stand on my feet you know that i live i breathe hate"

  • I believe he is saying that the government is deceitful, completely looking out for the wants of the rich/powerful and disregarding the needs of the lower class. They cover everything up (Weapons of Mass Destruction) so on so forth. Eddie (ASP vocals) or whoever the point of view is coming from is surprised that he has even been able to speak against the government for this long without being locked up. The government (and possibly Eddie at this point due to the tyranny of the government) live a hateful existence.

"So fucking tell me were there days when things were so much better? before you were such a self loathing hateful bitch."

  • Here I think he is asking if there ever were times when America wasn't so oppressive/hateful/controlling towards its people and if so wtf happened to those times. When he says self-loathing hateful bitch it makes sense b/c often America is represented as a woman (Lady Liberty brandishing guns on the cover of their cd).

"recognize the hell that you're spewing forth what we might have shared is nothing anymore what you said to me was never meant to be"

  • Telling the government to recognize the hell/carnage they are causing worldwide and on our own people. What we might have shared is nothing anymore is exemplary of the promise our forefathers started out with in our constitution being destroyed by our current government.

  • What you said to me was never meant to be again I think is referring to our forefathers promising a life of freedom and it all turning out to be a lie.

My favorite hardcore band for sure, just saw them at Liskfest. Got a chance to meet Eddie and Ben and they are straight up very awesome guys.
