I think this song is quite simply a metaphor for leaving your old life behind and taking a risk at trying to move forward and accept the changes that happen along the way.
I think the line "I'm leaving the light on just for the sight. Might make someone think that I'm still around" is like saying you're leaving an old part of your life behind but you're holding on to the memories so that there's always something to remember it by.
This person clearly has a negative attitude towards their life though, and they're "walking rounds in search for stars these nights" - which in my opinion means they're trying to find some glimmer of hope in what has become a "perfectly brown" and boring existence.
"I pick up stones 'cause I might need them (You're gonna throw 'em, won't you?)" - in my opinion is a metaphor for preparing yourself for the hardships you might face whilst "finding stars", the glimmers of hope.
And the line "I tried with books, but I'm not pleased yet (Come on and read it for me, read it for me)" is the person saying that they've tried to find an easy way forward through the experiences of others but they haven't found an easy solution.

But that's just my interpretation.
