First off, great song. Every time I listen to it I get a rush of energy. Hopefully all of "Life Starts Now" will rock as hard as this single.
I think this song could be about many things, including rising above the crowd, and taking charge of your life, as vane and Angel of Sin have already pointed out. But I'd like to add another possible angle... (wait for it) ... DRUGS! :)
Now, I'll be the first to admit that there are far too many songs that people claim are ONLY about drugs. And usually I just laugh when people say that a song is only about drugs, especially when the lyrics are far too ambiguous to make this claim. So, I don't think this song is merely about drug use, but it could be one interpretation. A drug interpretation does seem far too obvious for a song like this... but what the hell, eh?
"Tonight, my head is spinning
I need something to pick me up"
I'm craving another fix. I'd like to take something to ease my pain. I'm not in a good state of mind, why don't I alter it?
"Tonight, I start the fire
Tonight I break away,"
I'm going to light up, or maybe shoot up. I'm going to leave this state of consciousness, I'm going to break away from society's expectations.
"Break!
Away from everybody
Break!
Away from everything"
Get away, or escape, from the crap you face in life, the people you can't stand, and forget about life for a while. Take a break from worrying about life.
"If you can't stand the way this place is
Take, yourself to higher places"
If life is getting you down, get high. If everything sucks, escape to a different state of mind/reality/consciousness. Go on a trip.
"At night I feel like a vampire
It's not right
I just can't give it up
I'll try to get myself higher"
I go out at night looking for my next fix to ease my cravings (like a vampire). It's not a good thing to do, but I'm addicted (to some extent, could be physical or mental addiction). So I'll get high.
"We're gonna light it up"
Let's blaze this J. :) (Or, in other words) We're going to get high on something/smoke something.
Like I said before, I'm not the kind of guy who sees drug references in every song, and I realize songs have multiple meanings, both to the song writers and listeners. So I may be way off, but I find the possible drug references fairly strong in this song.
Ugh, seriously? If you're not the type of guy to see drug references everywhere don't put them in this song. Your explanations seem rather far fetched. This isn't a song where you need to fill in the blanks like that.

I totally agree with rocknrolla2009. Alot of people do make unnecessary assumptions that songs are about drugs. However, I think its pretty obvious he's talking about marijuana in this song. He says "get myself higher" and "we're gonna light it up."
What else could that possibly mean? Its pretty straightforward.

Also in "Home" by TDG, he says "by the time you come home, i am already stoned"
so it is likely he would be talking about his marijuana use here too.
