The lyrics to this song are really sad. Its too bad, the chorus could be part of a very warming love song.
Here's my take:
The guy obviously had no choice whether or not he was leaving the relationship. The girl he loved made that choice for him, whether he was "untrue" or not. That's the way it goes sometimes, and its hard to accept. His attempts to reconcile were futile, and now he is left with a burning memory. While the last verses of the song are somewhat disturbing, you really can't blame him.. splitting up with the one he loved wasn't his choice.
