I personally felt that this whole album is more of a story. "Holding On" is right before this song and I agreed with most that's it's about a girl who is depressed and commits suicide when the narrator's love is not enough to keep her here in this world. When paired with this song, it's almost a continuation of that story of her going thru with the suicide and him still being haunted by her in his dreams to the point that this obsession is affected him everyday. As tormented as he is by her loss, he still wants to dream about her.
