The only part I don;t understand is the line "hanging ropes will never keep you". What is he refering to? Or is it that simple, tying Him to ropes will not hold Him away from us.

"The gallows" refer to the implement used for executing a person by hanging. The singer chose to forgo a promised "marriage" with God, and instead choosing to be executed (by rejecting God and rebelling against His Law). "But", the singer says "... hanging ropes will never keep you…" This describes God's incomprehensible passion for us in that he would not let our execution go forward. He instead, driven by his great love, stayed our sentence of death, giving us another chance to choose life; Life with Him as our Lover and Lord.
