I think his true opinion of the matter is at the end of the lyrics when he says that no one has to do anything with their life or flesh because who says we do? But at the same time, we will have to face life and adapt to it sooner or later. It sucks, but we'd be dumb to think we can avoid it.

the first is of someone who is seemingly productive in the economy and has a balanced mindset and a good grip on modern life. And for the second, I've speculated he is talking about someone refusing to start making the decisions for their future.
his criticism of the first is that the person is not truly happy with their job and life situation despite how right it looks. the second person, is recieving some social shame for refusing to face the reality. he comforts this person in bascially saying, "No one can tell you the right way to live."
grim, but true in this song and in my own experience, every way to live has its drawbacks. modern life puts us in a situation in which we are stuck in a lame situation with no real alternatives.
