The fact that April-March(Almost a full year) can be cruel and there's only so much sorrow you can take.
e.g. A whole year of sorrow
"I reckon this much could be a contender" just doesn't make sense to me at all.
ALSO:
"Know how I dig you on?" SHOULD BE: "I know how I did you wrong."
It fits with the preceeding line: No more is this a taste I want to savor.
He's feeling regret and he wants to stop being a playboy. He knows he treated someone like crap.
