Matt is singing about heartbreak and loss of of a loved one and the loneliness of it. I also get the impression he is singing about his bipolar disorder and it keeping him away from being able too get close too anyone. But there's hope because he's not going too give up and keep trying to be his best too overcome his issues.
I'd agree, full of nostalgia of simpler mental times for him when he had less to worry about and less interfering with what he wanted his life to be. Acceptance that he's not able to do that all the time but that he will fight to do so til the end
