I think this song on the album splits it in two halves, one half leads to "life" and the other half leads to "death". The decision comes with how you view the second stanza, and first chorus of this song. The bonus track "Funeral Dress" brings this song and the album full circle. In "Funeral Dress" he talks about not being able to wait for his ex-wife, the lover, to be able to "cross that line" which is death. In this song he may, or may not commit suicide based on your view of the second stanza. If he does though (and dies from the fall) then the final stanza is him wandering in death, finally looking back down on her. If he lives, then it's just about him moping, regretting, reminiscing and trying to move on. The fact that "Funeral Dress" was not included on the original release lends to the belief that Fitzsimmon's wanted people to have a more optimistic view of the ending then death.
