I agree that this song is about a breakup with imbalanced feelings.. I always got the vibe that he has some goal or vision in his mind that he needs to follow for himself, one that requires him to end the relationship, and he can only hope his partner will let him go accomplish that goal. In the end he wants to at least be friends ("All I wanna do is make it through to the other side") but he's really more happy for himself than anything that the relationship has ended (hence it "feels like home... I know I broke out.") LOVE this song!
