To me this song is obviously written by one of the guys in the band about being on the road and having a girlfriend back home. He really cares about her but he knows she would be better off if they just ended it because it's not gonna work with him so far away. Being so far away and the line "I can't fix this from a phone" is saying there's nothing he can do over the phone to make the relationship work and his endless sorry s won't help either.
