In my opinion I think its about being diagnosed with cancer.

At the beginning she says "And sitting at my side this mockery of life: a plastic plant strictly for tasteless decor" and when you have cancer all the meds and chemo practically suck the life right out of you which is why she's calling the plant a "mockery of life" because when you are seriously sick everyone around you is hoping for you to live and not die.

"Well there's nothing left to say. The word's just collapse into colorful waves in the spectrum of sound. And it's easy on the ears. And it's nice to hear but it doesn't mean a thing. No it doesn't mean a thing." Because she might have cancer they can't say anything and when they do say something to comfort each other it doesn't mean anything because the situation is so bad.

"The silence breaks like a small earthquake shattering the calm - it's my name." No one was saying anything so when the silence was finally broken it sounds unfamiliar.

"Your chin falls towards your lap, you know you can't come back. Just one more thing to make this a little bit harder. You'll wait for the turn out. Until then a sense of doubt hangs in the air like grief in a funeral parlor." Meaning it could be either life or death for her.

"So tell me I'm okay with no areas of gray. Tell me I can go, just don't say you don't know, because there's nothing I can't take like these areas of gray, so tell me I'm okay." The areas of gray being the cancer and that if they tell her she does have cancer she can take it.
